This training module is intended for UNC employees that work in the IMAC work environment, particularly industrial work locations where industrial dust may be generated as a result of work processes performed. Dusts that can be considered combustible dusts can be generated at some UNC IMAC work locations including Woodworking Shops, Maintenance Shops, and Power Generating Facilities where dust producing equipment and fossil fuels are used.

This training module reviews the hazards that can be posed by combustible dusts as referenced by the U.S Chemical Safety Board, Federal OSHA, North Carolina Department of Labor, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Hazards posed by combustible dusts have long been recognized in industry, but in recent years numerous fatal accidents have occurred in General Industry.

In addition to the below online UNC combustible dust hazard awareness training module, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board has developed an excellent safety video which reviews actual combustible dust accidents and causes that have occurred in General Industry in recent years. The length of this video is approximately 25 minutes. The CSB video, Combustible Dust: An Insidious Hazard, can be viewed on YouTube.
